This is the first official compilation CD by the amazing Hungarian band, Korai Öröm! It features tracks mainly from their records from 2000 and up with the sole exception of the great opening track from the 1997 CD. IT opens with two tracks from the bands latest studio CD in 2005. Then we have the excellent opening track from the 2000 CD. It is a great mix of their more polished material as well as very groove psych stuff like track 5. Track 6 is some sort of remix track that I have never heard before (and I have all their CDs). The final track is Music fi Last (the only track on the CD with a real title!) and this is a short spacey piece… Not that representative of the band’s material. There is also a video called Hey Peasant, which shows the band driving around in these funny 3 wheeled cars and looking and doing strange things. Wie macht man eine Best of, wenn man seinen Songs gar keine Namen gibt? Ja, verflixt, woher weiß die Band auf der Bühne, welches Ding von Song als nächstes gespielt wird, wenn man sich nicht mal: "Jetzt kommt Stairway to heaven' dran" an den Kopf schmeißen kann? Korai Öröm stammen aus einer eigenen Welt, aus der sie Musik schöpfen und die sie eigenwillig gestalten, so heißt etwa Song Nummer 1 auf dieser CD "2005/1". Erstaunlicher Weise handelt es sich dabei jedoch um "echte" Musik und nicht um irgendwelche Dateien, die einmal geöffnet seltsames Zeug abrieseln. Korai Öröm sind nicht nur eine Band, die handwerklich mit richtigen Instrumenten arbeitet, sie sind eine richtig große Band, personell wechselt es stets, so sind diverse Musiker mal in und mal nicht in der Band, oder gründen Korai Öröm Projekte, die hier und dort auftreten oder Songs einspielen. Die 7 Stücke und das Video auf "Volume Zero" wurden von 13 Musikern eingespielt, wobei anzunehmen ist, das ein jeder der Involvierten nicht stets und in jedem Stück aktiv wurde. Korai Öröm sind keine Unbekannten, ihre Stilmixtur aus Neo Psychedelic, Dancefloor Rock, Ethno Elementen und jazzigen Harmonien ist ein trippiger Vorstoß in eine Soundwelt, die tanzbar, episch, cool, absolut modern, sphärisch und funky ist. Eines der wichtigsten Hauptmerkmale der Musik der Band ist das intensive Rhythmusgeschehen. Echtes Schlagzeug - kraftvoll und dynamisch gespielt - groovt in langen Songs stoisch dahin, partiell von programmierten Dancefloor-Rhythmen und latinbasierter Perkussion unterstützt. Alles spricht deutlich: dies ist Hippie-Musik, romantisch verklärte Sounds, die passend mal an Indianer oder andere ethnische Gruppen denken lassen, von eingängigen Rhythmen in den Kopf geschossen werden und dazu wilde Gitarrensoli oder trippige Synthesizersounds präsentieren. Dazu ein Joint und der Urlaub ist komplett. Korai Öröm wirken über Psychedelic Rock hinaus in die diversen Popmusiken hinein, ihre Eingängigkeit und Lieblichkeit auf der Basis der knackigen Rhythmen dürften satten Erfolg sicher haben. "Volume One" ist kein neues Korai Öröm-Album, sondern eine Werkschau der letzten zehn Jahre. Die Ungarn, deren Alben nur nach den Jahreszahlen ihres Erscheinens benannt sind und deren Tracks einfach durchnummeriert wurden, setzten in den letzten Jahren mehr auf Ethno-Trance-Techno-Elemente, tanzbare Grooves, in die aber noch unzählige exotische, sphärische Instrumentalpassagen eingewoben sind. Beispiele hierfür sind "2005/1", das durch seine eleganten Melodien und seinen unbändigen Vorwärtsdrall überzeugt, und "2005/2". In orientalische Gefilde entführt "2000/1" und deutet an, dass die Band in früheren Jahren mehr auf verschrobene, psychedelische, folkige Sounds setzte. Lediglich "1997/2" ist aus dieser Frühphase vertreten. Doch eines hat sich diese Bigband ungarischer Scharlatane stets bewahrt: Ihre hypnotischen, von diversen Percussion vorwärts getriebenen Rhythmen. Das kräftige "2001/1" sowie zwei Tracks, "6" und "Music Fi Past", vom 2003er Remix-Album "Reflected" runden das Album ab. Alle Alben von Korai Öröm zeichnen sich durch den kompletten Verzicht von Album- und Liedtitel aus. "Stücke und Alben haben keine Titel, weil die Botschaft unserer Musik nicht in Worten ausgedrückt werden", meint dazu die Band. Es geht bei den Ungarn nicht um Vordergründiges, vielmehr steht eindeutig der treibende Space Groove, sprich die Musik im Vordergrund. Und der bzw. die hat es seit fast schon 15 Jahren in sich. Bisher waren die Platten (meist auch als Vinyl-LP erhältlich) ausschließlich in der Heimat erschienen, "Volume Zero" ist die erste offizielle Veröffentlichung außerhalb Ungarns. Die Zusammenstellung ist als eine Art "Best of" konzipiert und bringt in konzentrierter Form jene Magie zusammen, die dafür sorgte, dass Korai Öröm bereits seit einigen Jahren ein etablierter Liveact und vor allem eine beliebte Festivalband (u.a. auch auf dem Herzberg Festival) sind. Die Auswahl ist exzellent zusammengestellt, wobei man vor allem auf neueres Material zurückgreift. Die Kompilation wird zudem noch um einen Remix, wie auch ein Video perfekt ergänzt. Gerne werden die Ungarn mit Ozric Tentacles verglichen, denn wie die Ozrics fließen auch bei Korai Öröm weltmusikalische Einflüsse ein, steht besonders die trippige Atmosphäre im Focus. Jedoch gibt es bei den Osteuropäern mitunter auch Gesang, wie vor allem der psychedelische, schwebende Einfluss weitaus größer ist. Hinzu kommen percussive und Electro / Ambient Elemente, die die Musik in aktuellere Gefilde führt. "Volume Zero" macht Laune auf mehr, bietet aber ebenso einen prächtigen Eindruck vom Soundkosmos des Planeten Korai Öröm. Kristian Selm, Progressive Newsletter

Zero ist eine Zusammenstellung von Korai Öröm-Titeln, die das erklärte Ziel verfolgt, "der Gruppe ein weiteres Publikum außerhalb Ungarns zu erschließen." Ob es tatsächlich auch eine Art Best-of ist, wie der Pressetext weiter verheißt, bleibt dem Urteil des Hörers überlassen, zumal Stücke der ersten beiden Alben fehlen und der Schwerpunkt klar auf den aktuelleren Alben liegt. Auf Zero wurden Titel aus den regulären Alben 1997, 2000, 2001 und 2005 mit Stücken des Remix-Albums "Reflected" kompiliert. Dadurch erfährt das Album schon einen gewissen Bruch. Zwar ist auch bereits die Musik der Jahreszahlen-Alben ein leicht ins Tanzbein gehender, weltmusikalisch gefärbter, z.T. mit weiblichen Vocals versehener Spacerock, aber die Remix-Stücke atmen hörbarer noch den Geist der Kultur moderner Electronica, vor allem auch durch den Einsatz schwerer Dancefloorbeats. Der Charme der Korai-Öröm-typischen Mischung bleibt bei den Remixen gleichwohl erhalten, erfährt jedoch eine etwas neue Ausrichtung. Korai Öröm knüpfen hier noch stärker an die Clubkultur an. Mir gefällt auch dieser sehr hypnotische Electronic-Sound, dem Puristen mag es aber gegen den Strich gehen. Das Video – zu einem Stück des Albums "2005" – ist ein Roadmovie, das Motive von Hippies, Jesus, Frieden, "Loveparade"-mäßigem, "Red Bull"-ähnlichem, sowie städtischem wie ländlichem Leben in Ungarn verknüpft. Interpretationsvorschläge nimmt der Rezensent dankend entgegen... Meiner Meinung nach ist Zero ein schlüssig aufgebauter Einstieg in den Kosmos von Korai Öröm, der den Hörer auch mit den verschiedenen Facetten des neueren Bandsounds vertraut macht. Korai Öröm's instrumentation is unconventional for space rock: whistle, jew's harp, khoomei, trumpet, fuyara, tilinko, drum (tending to bongo), plus Santana-styled guitar. Progrock with folk flair? Her compositions are patched together out of recorded jams. Never peanut butters! Volume Zero, released in 2007, compiles work from the previous 7 studio and 2 live albums. According to Emil Biljarski, one of the musicians with the band the longest, recordings pale to their 1.5 - 3 hour long improv sets, with casts of up to 13, accompanied by delusional visuals. Spezialisiert auf osteuropäische Psychedelicatessen und diesem Orbit Kompatibles legt der LollipopShop ein Meisterwerk des ungarischen psychedelischen Progressive-Big-Band-Rock vor. Mit mal orientalischen Gesangsduktus, mal Grateful Dead-Ausschweifungen mäandern die namenlosen Titel durch Raum, Zeit und Klang - ohne bei aller Weitschweifigkeit die Struktur zu verlieren. Mit Sitar kommt dies am besten. Aber auch die Wucht der - wer erinnert sich? - Rasenden Leichenbeschauer bleibt als Stilelement dieser improvisationsfreudigen Mucke klug erhalten. Die meisten Songs sind zwischen 6 und 8 Minuten, als Schmankerl gibt es sogar noch eine Videoclip "Hey Peasant". Das Dosierte Leben Nr 58

Korai Öröm is perhaps the most well-known psychedelic rock band in Hungary, and this is their first compilation album. The band has been labelled as the Hungarian Ozric Tentacles, and it’s a rather suitable description. During the recent years this band that has over ten members has successfully transformed its groovy music with ethnic overtones into a format that suits dance club floors. The band is also known for not giving titles to their albums or tracks, they just get numbers. Volume Zero includes two tracks from album 2005 and one each from 2000, 2001 and 1997. In addition, the album includes two tracks from the Reflected remix album. There’s also a funny video "Hey, Peasant!" based on the band’s track "2005/8". Although I have most of the band’s output, this compilation is still very cool to own. The album starts with the very nice "2005/1" that opens up peacefully. Somewhere before one and a half minutes the groovy comp joins in. This is rather airy and pleasant number that has lots of percussion which is very typical for this band. Before the four-minute-marker there comes some beautiful female singing and then the tracks goes into a bit jazzy worlds. Starting off as ambient, "2005/2" is a dub-styled, freewheeling track that reminds me of Ozric Tentacles. The band’s music is mainly instrumental, but also this track has some vocals. It has a really floating feel to it and there are some excellent guitar stuff and some reeds. They speed it up at the end. "2001/1" begins peacefully with acoustic guitar and bird-song. The rhythm joins in pretty soon though, and the mix also has some Oriental-sounding percussion. The marvellous "1997/2" has some strummed acoustic guitar, a groovy rhythm and female vocals. "2001/1" starts to rock out immediately with tough lead guitar, rhythmical going and a repetitive bass line, though. The flute brings in some ethnic moods to the track. This one has a nice, danceable carnival atmosphere and some occasional male vocals. The more electronic sounding "6" that is reworked by Al Haca Soundsystem from Germany apparently includes samples from some movie. This is a rather good track too, although I don’t like this just as much as the rest of the album. The rather minimal "Music Fi Last" ends the album with its hazy moods. The video track "2005/8" is more up-beat, lively number that fits well to the video. With this CD the band tries to reach more audiences outside of Hungary, even though they are already quite popular and have played for example in Russia, Ireland, Germany, England and Italy. Volume Zero is an excellent starting point for a journey into the band’s exquisite, high-quality and psychedelic music that is filled with joy of life end energy. Gen-Dos ist das Rock-Group-Projeckt von Gendos (Gennadi Tchamzyryn). Die Aufnahen stammen aus 2001, wurden in Kyzyl/Tuva aufgenommen und sind leider von einer mainstream-artigen heavy rock Ästehtik geprägt. Das können Yat-Kha besser, aber die hatten auch Zugriff auf Weltklasse-Musiker und Produzenten... Hm..?!?

Klever is a new group from St. Petersburg who is playing instrumental music which could be called psychedelic lounge; improvised, dubby, soft-noisy. A true discovery this year!

2 guitars, bass and drums and: overtone singing. No songs but tracks! Tribal beats, bit like Korai Orom, a German group though. A nice discovery from this year's festival season.

Chirgilchin were champions of the Tuvan national throat singing competitions in Kyzyl/Tuva.
Chirgilchin means either mirage or miracle in the Tuvan language. In 1996 Alexander Bapa, also the founder and producer of Tuvan Throat Singing group Huun Huur Tu, gathered the cream of the younger generation of Tuvan musicians and formed Chirgilchin. On this record Chirgilchin is Mongoun-Ool Ondar, Igor Koshkendey, Aldar Tamdyn. Released in 2005.

Chirgilchin waren Sieger des national Kehlkopfgesangswettbewerb in Kyzyl/Tuva. Chirgilchin bedeutet auf Tuvinisch entweder Fata Morgana oder Wunder. Die Gruppe wurde von Alexander Bapa, dem Mitbegründer von Huun Huur Tu, 1996 zusammengebracht. Chirgilchin sind auf diesem Album Mongoun-Ool Ondar, Igor Koshkendey, Aldar Tamdyn. Das Album wurde 2005 in Californien veröffentlich und enthält 12 Stücke mit traditionellem tuvinischem Material, Kehlkopfgesang, Igil, Doshpuluur. Kaum erhältlich in Europa...

File under: ACID/ GARAGE/ PSYCH. Greek garage band originating from the 90's with their 2nd album. 15 originals including 2 collaborations with legendary SEEDS member SKY SAXON. This is where 60s garage punk meets psychedelia. Yesterday's Thoughts were formed in Athens, Greece in 1996. The main influences of the group are focused on the mid sixties US punk and psychedelic sounds. In 1998, they released their first 7" E.P. including four original songs & in 2002 their first LP titled «Searchin' in shadows». Been busy giving concerts & interviews as well as songs in many fanzines and compilations. Opened festivals for many top bands like the Fuzztones, the Nomads (Sweden), Steve Wynn and the Seeds. Being fans of Seeds' music for many years this was a real pleasure for the band especially meeting Sky Saxon and sharing the feelings of respect for each other's music. On May 2004 Yesterday's Thoughts signed up with a newly formed Greek label, Sound Effect Records in order to have their second LP as the label's first release. In the meantime Sky "Sunlight" Saxon came for a second concert in Athens and surprised the band by proposing two new ideas he had and asking them to take part in their LP! After working with the band for some days they co-wrote the "If I had some marijuana" & "Build yourself an aero-plane" songs with Sky's leading vocals. You can listen to them along with 13 original compositions of Yesterday's Thoughts in this LP called "Let's take a ride".
